Fear and The Lord of the Flies

When we are young we have many fears this may be because the world seems even bigger when we are all so small. When I was young I was terrified of my attic. Our old house is full of squeaks like when you step on certain floorboards, and open an old wooden door. However, none of this was anything compared to the attic, it was dark, cold, and worst of all filled with bats. Their beady eyes, sharp fangs, and claws made shivers run down my spine. The attic door was across the hall from my room and it was forbidden territory for me, I would never get near it let alone open it. Through age you mature and understand things for example, just because you open a door that doesn’t mean a bat will fly out at you. Still, when you are young you don’t realize all the foolish things at the time you are doing them. In The Lord of the Flies the boys are still young and their fears seem logical to them. My little kid fear of bat and our attic is very similar to the boys’ fear of the beast in the forest. They think that if they enter the forest that there will be a beast. Truly though because they feared the beast and stayed away then their fear grew stronger. Fear is something that we never out grow, however, during experience we learn what not to fear and how to cope with our fear.
